He’s Central Australia’s foremost field botanist, with 40 years out there, on the ground. This book distills his knowledge of the Centre’s plants and ecosysystems and highlights his concerns about their survival in the face of the lack of fire control of the spinifex and buffel grass. These grasses produce hot fires when they burn, which can kill and is killing the shrub flora essential for the survival of its fauna. They also kill the small surface plants which hold the soil together and help prevent erosion and thus desertification. Not an easy read for someone like me with no prior knowledge, but worth the effort.
